"One day, my son came home from kindergarten screaming, 'Mom, you've got to go to the PTA meeting tonight, you've just got to!' and I read the paper he brought home saying that the PTA is solely responsible for any and all good relations between parent and teacher. He added that the only parents who don't belong are the ones who just don't care. So I went because naturally I cared and because everybody seemed to want me to pay the 50c that proved it. I walked into my son's kindergarten room, waited in line to introduce myself to the teacher, and right off the bat I put my foot in my mouth by asking, 'How is my son doing in school?' The teacher laughed for a little while, then explained that this was no time to discuss a student, 'not in front of all these people.'
