A feast of thanks
Long before Southern Cooking was acknowledged as a culinary category, my mother and grandmothers were doing it. Most of my childhood Thanksgivings were family gatherings at my maternal grandmother's North Carolina home, where she laid out her sideboard with the quintessential dishes of a farmhouse feast: corn and beans preserved from her summer garden, sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows, homemade pickles and cranberry compote, roast turkey and local country ham, and homemade biscuits.
